Free program: Les Miserables

France 1815, the imprisoned men are forced to labour. After nineteen years of imprisonment Jean Valjean is released on parole, but is always condemned to be an outcast. Eight years later with fake identity, he becomes a wealthy factory owner and the mayor of a city. One of his workers, Fantine, gets into a fight when the other workers discover that she is sending money to her secret illegitimate child and is thrown out. Fantine sings about her broken dreams and about how she was abandoned by the father of her daughter; “I dreamed a dream…” Nine years pass and Paris is in an uproar. Popular leader General Lamarque, the only man in the government who shows mercy to the poor is ill and may die soon. In a secret political meeting a group of idealistic students gather to prepare for a revolution. When the news of the General's death arrives, the students march out into the streets to gather popular support. They build their barricade and defy an army warning to surrender or die. In the name of France and their ideology, the rebellers want to fight, no matter what. “Do you hear the people sing…”

2008-2009

Short program: Radio classic with a twist

This renewed radio classic takes us back to the light atmosphere of the 80's. This time the singers aren't the original artists and in fact there isn't a single instrument played in this song. The piece is a cappella, vocal music without instrumental accompaniment, where all the instrumentals are played by human voices.

For the first time in the history of synchronized skating a program is skated to music performed like this.

A classic recorded by the British rock band Queen in 1984, Radio Ga Ga, and MIU's new short program, playfully ”Radio classic with a twist”

Free program: Pandora's Box with Finnish flavor

There is a box, that shouldn't be opened. Beautiful Pandora, the first woman, can't help her curiosity and she carefully raises the lid of the box. At the same moment evilness spreads into the world. Terrified, Pandora slams the lid shut, but the damage has already been done.

All the evils and ills of mankind have escaped from the box. Pandora tries to correct her mistake. She opens the lid again in order to push the evil back into the box, when Hope, the only thing left in the box, flies out into the world. Even though all the evil couldn't be recaptured, the most important thing is that Hope was freed and remains amongst us.

Marigold's free program is skated this year to a beautiful piece by the Finnish band Nightwish: The Poet and The Pendulum. We have had the honor and joy of meeting the composer Tuomas Holopainen in person. The wonderful feedback we got from Tuomas lifts the program to it's greatest splendor with strong interpretation.

2007-2008

During the last few years MIU had undergone a certain change of generations and the old and experienced Marigold skaters had left to face new challenges. Our renewed, athletic and energetic team set out for the new season in high spirits. All the national competitions of this season were a tough fight, but unfortunately we placed second in every competition. In spite of this, we never ceased to believe in ourselves. At the World Championships in Budapest we skated two good programs, but to our and some other peoples amazement, and in spite of a bronze medal in the short program, we did not reach a place on the podium.

Short program: Carmen - A Classic with a twist

World famous, emotional and passionate Carmen classic is turned into quite something else in our hands. The music is not the familiar one and neither is the storyline. Instead of flirting, our Carmen warns about the dangers of the opposite sex.

Free program: Aida

A long time ago Aida, an Ethiopian princess, was captured and brought into slavery in Egypt. A military commander struggles to choose between his love for her and his loyalty to the Pharaoh. This is the story of a love that flourished in a time of hate; of lovers no tyranny could separate. This is the story of a forbidden, secret and passionate love.

2006-2007

During the season we experienced many unforgettable moments, both good and bad. Our team won the National Championship for the tenth time at the most exciting National Championships of all times.

The beginnig of the season included two unusual and exciting projects. Nine university students of Marigold got the chance to represent Finland at the students Olympics at the Torino Winter Universiades. Marigold IceUniversiade, a team formed of the former and present skaters of Marigold IceUnity, skated a flirty and playful short program “Let me be good to you” and a new version of the beloved old Marigold program  “Lion King” as the free program. The team brought silver to Finland from the first Universiades that synchronized skating has ever been a part of. The other part of Marigold IceUnity had the opportunity to travel to Rome in Italy to star in the Hurjaruth winter circus.

The National Championship gave us more faith after the good and not so good results of the season. Therefore we left for the World Championships in London, Canada in high spirits. Unfortunately everything did not go as planned, a dramatic fall in the short program caused the program to be interrupted and MIU to place eight in the short program. We skated a good free program and got a bronze medal in the free program, but still placed eight in the whole competition.

Short Program: HRH - It’s now or never!

Strength, hard attitude, will to fight and above all courage are needed when you want to be nothing but ROCK! Even the trickiest guitar solos are preformed with crushing coolness and apparent determination that clears all obstacles from the way.

Free Program: The Grand Canyon

Where the rough rocks rise into heights, noble eagles circle the deep blue sky and the golden sun paints everything in sight a glowing orange, there is the Grand Canyon. This breathtakingly beautiful nature’s wonder hides the most unexpected and beautiful landscapes and experiences.

2005-2006

The small disappointment of bronze at World’s was quickly forgotten and what was left was a great desire to climb back on to the highest podium. More new skaters joined the team than surely ever before in the team’s history as we welcomed 15 new members to MIU. The spirit of our team developed easily during the season due to successful occasions as well as hardships.

Gangsterit

The purity of steps required by the rules needed tremendously practice, and it was not too easy to achieve. The results of the beginning of the season included both second and third places, but at the end our hard work was rewarded in the best possible way: at the World Championships in Prague we achieved already our third World Championship! We had a great skate both in our short program, “The Gangsters”, as in our free skate, “The Goddesses”, and for the second time we won both sections of the World Championships.
